Bootable virus and malware removal tool from Microsoft

Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is a basic, portable antivirus tool that can be run from a CD/DVD or USB drive to try to rescue a computer that doesn’t boot up.

Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper’s executable file downloads all necessary files during installation, which means you need to be connected to the Internet when creating your bootable CD or USB drive. They all take about 250 MB and may a take a while to download – we actually had to try a few times to successfully finish installing Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

Once launched, Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper scans the computer in search of viruses, rootkits and other malware. The scan can be paused and resumed, and the program also lets you download new virus signature files – as long as the infected system has an Internet connection.

Note that Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is not a replacement for a full antivirus, as it doesn’t provide the same level of protection. It’s more like a first-aid tool for situations in which you can’t turn your PC on due to a virus or malware infection.

Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is a standalone basic antivirus tool that can help you boot up and rescue an infected computer from a CD or USB drive.

i hate ms. Another tool to fix security holes in MS.Tool that needs external media. Primitive method! It's amazing how people today find common restart the computer once per day, catch viruses once a week, and have to go to the ms site to download a stupid program.More and more options such as Apple, Linux, Unix and even a start to make sense ...

By far the best rescue tool even in beta!. I have used this amazing tool few times already and love the simplicity and ease of use. The fact that it supports all the media types - CD, DVD, USB and ISO(for advanced users)is truly commendable. I did not have any download issues on my broadband internet connection. It took about 20 minutes for the creation of a bootable USB. I have used the tool again to update the USB when using it at a later time. I specifically loved this feature. Personally, I would say this is the best rescue tool available out there even though it is still in beta. Pros: Ease of use of the tool to create the bootable mediaSupport for all the media types - CD, DVD, USB, ISOAutomatic update of the USBGreat FAQ and help documentation on connect (it is not usually seen in beta products) Cons: Does not let you do anything in the offline environment when the scan is progressing

Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.
